Anthony Joshua vs Oleksandr Usyk date and venue officially confirmed

Anthony Joshua’s heavyweight title showdown with Oleksandr Usyk has finally been confirmed with the two Olympians to meet at the Tottenham Stadium on Saturday 25 September.

The Briton will put his IBF, WBO and WBA (Super) belts on the line against the former unified cruiserweight champion Usyk, who is undefeated in 18 fights.

The Ukrainian conquered the cruiserweight division by winning all four belts before moving up to the heavyweight division in 2019, recording wins over Chazz Witherspoon and Dereck Chisora.

Like Joshua, Usyk won gold at London 2012 in the heavyweight division, with Joshua’s triumph coming at super-heavyweight.

Joshua had been on collision course with Tyson Fury this year only for their all-British heavyweight unification showdown to collapse following Deontay Wilder’s successful arbitration case.

The American successfully enforced a third fight with ‘The Gypsy King’ – which has now been postponed until October – with Joshua instead taking on WBO mandatory challenger Usyk in his first fight of 2021.

Tottenham last hosted a boxing event in 1987 when Frank Bruno defeated Joe Bugner at the old White Hart Lane.

Spurs take on north London rivals Arsenal the same day at The Emirates.

‘The date is set and we are fully locked in,’ said Joshua.

‘September 25, Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, I put it all on the line again and it’s time to defend my crown.

‘We are two Olympic Gold medallists who have fought our way to the top and never avoided challenges.

‘The stadium is exceptional, the atmosphere will be electric, I’m honoured to be the first person to fight in such an awe inspiring venue. The stage is set and I am ready to handle business.’
