How McGregor became the laughing stock of Twitter after Poirier loss

Conor McGregor became the laughing stock of Twitter and was mocked with brutal memes after his defeat by Dustin Poirier last time out… now the Irishman has another shot at glory and will be desperate to avoid being the butt of the jokes once more

  • Conor McGregor suffered his first KO loss in UFC from Dustin Poirier in January
  • It was an embarrassing and damaging defeat for his hopes of a Khabib rematch
  • The smooth-talking Irishman was mocked on social media after a difficult night
  • This time around, McGregor will be desperate to avoid being the butt of the jokes

Nearly six months have passed since Conor McGregor was embarrassed inside and outside the ring by Dustin Poirer – first losing their UFC bout before becoming the butt of jokes across social media.

Fight fans stuck the boot in on the Irishman and his ‘American football’ sized leg after his knock-out defeat to Poirier, trolling the Irishman with a host of brutal memes.

The ‘Notorious’ had promised a 60-second triumph and despite looking unusually tense, won the first-round. It all fell apart from there, as the American’s relentless attacks on McGregor’s right leg weakened the favourite.

The Dubliner was dropped two minutes and 32 seconds into the second round, overwhelmed by a hailstorm of punches from Poirier.

Conor McGregor was stunned by underdog Dustin Poirier with a knock-out on in January

This shot of McGregor lying on the floor in agony after being knocked-out went instantly viral

One meme depicted the Irishman lying next to Simba from the Lion King in the iconic scene

Another saw the photo inserted into a hospital bed with a viral shot of Bernie Sanders watching

The shot of McGregor down on the canvas, curled up against the cage with his swollen face betraying a mixture of shock and pain, instantly became a meme.

Twitter user @pakalupapitow wrote: ‘Get well soon’ and edited the losing fighter into a hospital bed, with the viral shot of Bernie Sanders included beside him.

One blended the moment Simba tries to wake Mufasa in the Lion King movies with McGregor lying on the deck, with another meme placing a blanket over the fallen champion.

As fans continued to poke fun, the image was also photoshopped to include pillow and blanket

McGregor was unable to coper with Poirer’s brutal leg-kicks and a final flurry of punches

‘How will Conor McGregor ever come back from this man? Money can’t delete these memes,’ @hassanKara_ wrote.

It’s nothing new for the Irishman, for whom the brutal mockery after his unforgettable 2018 defeat to Khabib Nurmagomedov will never be topped.

At the time, he vowed to ‘regroup’ and ‘do it again’ with Poirier, with both men now having tasted victory over the other… and this weekend he will get his chance for a third time.

McGregor was gracious in defeat in January and paid tribute to his opponent – saying he fought ‘ a hell of a fight’.

The 32-year-old will get a chance to seek his revenge over Poirier on Saturday night

‘It’s heartbreaking, it’s hard to take, highest highs and the lowest lows. My leg is completely dead – even though I felt like I was checking them I was badly compromised. It is like an American football in my suit at the minute.

‘Dustin had a hell of a fight. I felt alright in the second round, felt better than him in the clinch but too little too late – my leg was compromised and I didn’t adjust.

‘Fair play to Dustin, I am happy for him. I am happy to compete in these challenging times. I don’t know where I am at the minute. He fought a hell of a fight but what can you do, I am happy for him.’

This time, you sense the Irishman would be far less than happy too see a similar outcome, though.
