Joe Joyce hopes England stars bounce back from Euros pain like he did in 2016

Joe Joyce knows all about final heartache but believes England's football heroes can fight back.

The London heavyweight lost his Rio 2016 Olympic decider to France's Tony Yoka.

But now silver medallist Joyce is on the brink of becoming a world champion in the pro ranks as he closes in on his shot at one of the top dogs in the division.

First he has to take care of tough nut Carlos Takam on July 24 at Wembley Arena – just yards from where the Three Lions' Euro dream was crushed on Sunday against Italy.

But he reckons Gareth Southgate's men can respond like him and can go for glory at the World Cup next year as he bids for a world title.

He said: “"It was a young team placed in the most high-pressure situation and it didn't work out.

"But I am a pretty decent example of how finishing a cruel second at the top level doesn't have to spell the end.

"After getting robbed of my gold I was the Commonwealth champion very early in my pro career and feel I am on the cusp of a world title now.

"And this England team goes to the World Cup in just over a year, with all these new experiences to add to their armoury.

"When you get so close to that gold medal, or trophy, and you don't get it, it can knock your confidence and push you back to square one.

"Or it can be a great fuel and inspiration to get that momentum back on track and finish off all the hard work you put in and get the rewards at the second go."

Joyce returns to the ring next week for the first time since beating Daniel Dubois last November.

Cameroon-born Frenchman Takam has won four fights on the bounce since back-to-back defeats by Anthony Joshua and Derek Chisora in 2018.

Joyce added: “If he comes to fight me the same way he did AJ and Chisora, he will be in for a very painful night.

"But I am bigger, younger, stronger and faster.
