Rory McIlroy flies out for Mykonos stag do just a week before Ryder Cup starts

Rory McIlroy has jetted off to Mykonos for a stag do just a week before the Ryder Cup. European ace McIlroy insists he will be ‘sensible’ during his break as he builds up to his seventh appearance at the iconic event.

The Northern Irishman will head to Rome alongside the rest of Team Europe. They will hope to avenge their defeat by Team USA in 2021.

All 24 golfers have been preparing for the Ryder Cup, although McIlroy has gone for a slightly unorthodox approach. The 34-year-old will attend a stag do in Mykonos for two days before returning to London.

McIlroy insists he will be ‘sensible’ on the Greek party island and will have four days of further preparation prior to the Ryder Cup. However, Europe captain Luke Donald has warned the World No 2 that he is no longer in his early 20s and must be careful.

“Yes, the issue did crop up. Rory understands that he is not 21 or 22 any more,” Donald said when McIlroy’s trip was made public.

“There’s nothing wrong having some fun with your friends, but I think he’s got wise enough shoulders to know that he won’t go crazy, so no concerns there.”

McIlroy joked about the trip when he was asked during his own press conference. He pointed out that it would be a ‘nice’ and ‘needed’ trip. He will return to London on Wednesday before taking four days to prepare for Rome.

“Hey, I’m sensible when I need to be,” McIlroy laughed when quizzed on the trip.

“It’s only 48 hours, nice little trip, and probably needed as well. So I go from here to practise in Rome [with the team next Monday] to Wentworth [for next week’s BMW PGA Championship on Tuesday].

“I get back from Mykonos into London on the Wednesday evening and then have four good days to get myself ready for Rome.”

Seven of Donald’s European stars finished in the top 10 at the BMW PGA Championship, including McIlroy. “It’s awesome. We’re in a good spot,” McIlroy said. “We had a really good day in Rome on Monday, the team’s been shaping up really well for the last couple of months, everyone’s been in pretty good form.”
