A triumphant Tom Brady has taken to social media to heap the praise on his Tampa Bay team after beginning the season with a commanding 19-3 win over Dallas Cowboys.
The 45-year-old began what is widely expected to be his final NFL season with the victory, finishing with a modest 212 yards, completing 18 of 27 passes for a touchdown and one inconsequential interception.
But for Brady, in a video simply titled ‘W’ that was shared on Monday morning, it was all about his team-mates – namely Mike Evans, Julio Jones, the Bucs defense and Leonard Fournette.
It was a winning start for Tom Brady and the Bucs on Sunday – they beat the Cowboys 19-3
The 45-year-old Brady produced an impressive display to orchestrate his side’s victory
‘That’s one down, 1 and 0,’ Brady said after the first game of his 23rd season. ‘Mike camp up big, Julio came up big. Defense came up big.
‘My boy Lenny! Actually took a tuddy from him tonight throwing it to Mike. Good to start the year 1 and 0. Now we are on the road and we will be ready to go – see you there.’
The next game for the Bucs is Sunday against New Orleans Saints at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome – the Saints opened their season with a narrow 27-26 win against Atlanta Falcons.
But for Brady, there will have been relief that he can turn his attention to what he is best at after a year that so far has been dominated by stories away from football.
After beginning 2022 by retiring and unretiring in 40 days, he took an 11-day hiatus from the Bucs training camp for reasons that are still not entirely clear.
Some rumors say he had a vacation planned with his family. It comes amid reports in US Weekly that his wife Gisele Bundchen is unhappy that he returned to NFL and that they are working through tension between them.
Brady would not be drawn on what he specifically left camp for, but said: ‘It’s all personal, you know. Everyone’s got different situations that they’re dealing with.
‘We all have really unique challenges to our life. I’m 45 years old, man. There’s a lot of s**t going on, so just gotta figure out life the best you can. It’s a continuous process.’
Brady’s wife, supermodel Gisele Bundchen, is reportedly unhappy at his decision to un-retire
She took to Twitter on Sunday night to wish her husband well for his first game of the season
Bundchen, pictured at a game in February last year, may see her husband Brady retire after this season if reports over the weekend are to be correct
The father of three, shares Benjamin, 12, and Vivian, nine with Gisele. His oldest son, Jack, 15, is from his relationship with ex-girlfriend Bridget Moynihan.
Bundchen was not at the game in person Sunday night but she took to Twitter to support her husband.
‘Let’s go Tom Brady! Let’s go Bucs!’ the 42-year-old wrote, alongside three star emojis.
But if a report by NFL insider Ian Rapaport is correct, Bundchen will soon see her husband step away from the sport once and for all.
‘He has never said it publicly, but multiple parties involved acknowledge that after last year’s retirement then unretirement, the end is coming,’ Rapoport said.
‘That is the understanding, that this is the final year.’
