Fantasy Injury Updates: Is Brandin Cooks playing Thursday night?

Brandin Cooks battled injuries in 2019 with the Rams, and his ’20 season with a new team isn’t getting off to a much better start. The new Texans WR has dealt with load management throughout training camp and now could be kept out of Thursday Night Football because a quad injury. His potential active/inactive status has fantasy football impacts on Deshaun Watson, Will Fuller, Randall Cobb and Kenny Stills, along with the obvious of Cooks himself. Of course, that will also affect Week 1 fantasy start ’em, sit ’em decisions, so you can bet plenty of owners will be searching for updates on whether Cooks will play right up until kickoff.

We’ll have updates below in the meantime and right up until the official inactive report is released at around 6:50 p.m. ET. For more fantasy news, follow us on Twitter @SN_Fantasy.

Is Brandin Cooks playing Thursday night?

Cooks didn’t receive full repetitions throughout August as the Texans attempted to keep him healthy, instead seeing him “carefully managed” throughout training camp. It turns out he was also dealing with a quad injury, as Cooks was limited in Monday’s and Wednesday’s practices in addition to missing Tuesday’s workout.

While it’s an overall positive that Cooks returned to some form of practice on Wednesday, it’s possible his snaps could be “carefully managed” Thursday night. An active Cooks would be a risky WR3/flex play. Houston will likely throw a lot, but Cooks can only produce if he stays on the field.

WEEK 1 STANDARD RANKINGS:
Quarterback | Running back | Wide receiver | Tight end | D/ST | Kicker

If Cooks is inactive, Kenny Stills becomes the Texans’ starting outside WR opposite Will Fuller. Stills would make an interesting Thursday Night Football DFS play if he starts. Fuller is a borderline WR2/3 regardless of Cooks’ status as he attempts to take over DeAndre Hopkins’ lead role in the Houston offense.

WEEK 1 PPR RANKINGS:
Quarterback | Running back | Wide receiver | Tight end | D/ST | Kicker

Deshaun Watson should be in your fantasy lineups regardless of Cooks’ status. Randall Cobb will also start in the slot regardless of whether Cooks plays. Cobb gets a slight boost if Cooks is out, becoming a borderline PPR flex play.
