Jimmy Garoppolo trade rumors: Future is ‘bleak’ for 49ers QB, expected to be dealt during 2021 NFL Draft

Jimmy Garoppolo’s future in San Francisco is “bleak.”

Per CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora, the 49ers are expected to move the incumbent quarterback at some point during the 2021 NFL Draft, with Garoppolo likely out of the Bay Area before the end of the weekend.

Garoppolo, 30, has been the subject of trade rumors since the 49ers decided to trade two future first-round picks to the Dolphins for the No. 3 overall pick in this year’s draft. Reports suggest that the 49ers are high on one of two quarterbacks entering the draft: Alabama’s Mac Jones and North Dakota State’s Trey Lance.

When recently asked about Garoppolo’s future, head coach Kyle Shanahan refused to make any definitive statements.

Garoppolo still has ample money left on his current deal, at roughly $25 million per year over the next two seasons, inhibiting San Francisco’s ability to trade him. Any deal would likely feature a contract restructuring.

Garoppolo’s career has been a mixed bag featuring both high-level quarterback play and injuries, with the passer missing nine games in 2020 with ankle issues.

While San Francisco is coming out of this weekend with a QB1, it almost definitely won’t be Jimmy GQ.
