On Tuesday, the New England Patriots placed practice-squad defensive lineman Bill Murray on the reserve/COVID-19 list.
Players can end up on the list for one of two reasons: testing positive for COVID-19 or being in close contact with someone who tested positive. Quarterback Cam Newton was the Patriots' first player to test positive this season.
Newton was tested last Friday, but the team didn’t learn of the results until Saturday morning. That prompted players and coaches to get tested multiple times on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. The team also shutdown Gillette Stadium for the weekend, and the game in Kansas City was postponed from Sunday to Monday.
The Patriots flew to Kansas City on Monday morning and took on the Chiefs that evening, losing 26-10.
The Tennessee Titans had their game against the Pittsburgh Steelers postponed last weekend after 18 players and coaches tested positive for coronavirus within the last week.
Murray was signed as an undrafted free agent out of William & Mary this offseason. The defensive tackle was cut at the end of training camp, but signed to the practice squad.
