Packers linebacker Za’Darius Smith used his stage on “Monday Night Football” to deliver a message in honor of Breonna Taylor.
Following a half-ending sack of Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan, Smith pulled his undershirt out from his jersey to reveal a message: “Rest in Heaven Breonna Taylor.”
Taylor, a Black emergency room technician, was shot and killed in her bed in March by Louisville police during a botched raid on her and boyfriend Kenneth Walker’s apartment. No homicide charges were charged against any of the three Louisville officers, though one was charged with wanton endangerment for blindly firing during the raid, with bullets entering an adjacent apartment.
Smith isn’t the first professional athlete to use his platform to honor Taylor or otherwise demand repercussions for the officers involved in her death.
Lakers Star Le’Bron James said he was “devastated, hurt, sad and mad” after a grand jury declined to charge any of the Louisville officers with homicide; NBA analyst Jalen Rose on Sept. 23 said “it would be a great day to arrest the cops that murdered Breonna Taylor.” MLB’s Rays delivered a similar message on Opening Day.
