Formula One star Daniel Ricciardo has reminded his former Renault boss Cyril Abiteboul that he is still required to get his first ever tattoo after losing a wager with the driver almost a year ago.

Ricciardo – who now drives for McLaren – made the bet with his former boss while he was still part of the Renault setup, and is determined to make sure the Frenchman lives up to his word.

The pair’s wager had a tattoo on the line, as Abiteboul bet his former employee that if he were to secure a podium finish for the team he would get inked up.

As a result Ricciardo finally secured victory from the wager last year, after picking up a podium finish at the Eifel Grand Prix in Nurburg, Germany, behind Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen.

Despite winning the bet, the Australian’s former boss is still yet to honour the wager after the idea seemed to have died out following Ricciardo’s move from Renault to McLaren.

However, the 32-year-old is determined to ensure the Frenchman ends up with the ink and revealed there was contact made between the pair following his Italian Grand Prix victory last month.

Ricciardo said: “I had an overwhelming number of emails, WhatsApp messages, and all of it, so I did see an email from him. There was the topic of tattoos, so I’m still very optimistic we could get this done before the year’s out.

“Otherwise it’s obviously going to drag on and become old news, so I’m determined to make it happen.”

Part of Ricciardo’s and Abiteboul’s terms of the bet were that the driver was allowed to pick the design of his former employer’s body art, however Abiteboul was able to pick the size and the positioning of the tattoo.

The driver discussed the design idea of the inking last year, admitting he wanted a German theme to the art to resemble the place where Ricciardo earned his podium finish.

He commented: “We’ll have to do some thinking now, but probably it will be something to do with me, but I think with a German flavour.

“This is obviously the place we did it. A little tip of the hat to something traditional in Germany as well.”

The Australian’s last outing came in the dramatic Russian Grand Prix in Russia just over a week ago, which was eventually won by Lewis Hamilton after adverse weather conditions forced Ricciardo’s teammate Lando Norris to narrowly miss out on a first ever win despite dominating the race for the most part.

Ricciardo himself ended up passing the struggling youngster who could only manage a seventh-place finish despite initially leading, as the experienced Australian found himself three places ahead in fourth.

This means the 32-year-old sits in eighth place in the driver standings, with one podium and win to his name this campaign.
