Alex Goode ready to fill Owen Farrell’s boots – just don’t tell his mum

Alex Goode says he is ready to fill Owen Farrell’s boots in club rugby’s match of the season – even if his mum would prefer he didn’t.

With England captain Farrell banned for Saracens’ Champions Cup quarter-final against Leinster, Goode is set to replace him at fly-half.

“When you play 10 you have to enjoy and relish the pressure and I do – rather more than my mum does,” said the fullback, who recently passed 300 games for the club.

“Mum doesn’t like me getting tackled at the best of times, she gets very nervous about me getting injured.

“In fact, she doesn’t like me goalkicking or even being involved. I think she’d rather I was on the bench!”

Goode is probably the most under rated player in English rugby and insists he can do a decent job in Dublin.

"I feel that when I have turned up as a 10 I have done a job pretty well, we have generally won and I feel I have contributed a lot," he said.

"Owen is unbelievable as a player and a leader but this team isn't built around one person."

Leinster have won every match this season but Goode warned: “We are the last team to beat them and they’re aware of that.

“We don’t need to try to pull rabbits out of a hat. We have a lot of experience of these big games and tight encounters. We know it’s not about trying to do something extraordinary, it’s about everyone trying to do their job unbelievably well.”
