Ajax goalkeeper Andre Onana weighs up a £35m move to the Nou Camp

‘Barcelona is my home… if I have to go back, I will go back’: Ajax goalkeeper Andre Onana weighs up a £35m move to the Nou Camp as Barca, Chelsea and PSG consider bids for him

  • Andre Onana has not ruled out a return to former club Barcelona
  • Onana says his relationship with the club’s president and coaches is strong
  • He would have to compete with Marc-Andre ter Stegen for the No 1 shirt
  • Frank Lampard and Thomas Tuchel are also said to be interested in the keeper

Andre Onana has not ruled out a return to Barcelona despite growing interest from both Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea.

Onana came through Barcelona’s academy as a teenager but turned down the chance to re-sign for the Spanish giants last summer.

The 24-year-old Ajax goalkeeper is now said to be open to returning to his former club as his relationship with the president Josep Maria Bartomeu and coaches remains strong.

Onana is contracted until June 2022 at Ajax but it’s understood he is ready to move on

Ajax want between £30-£35million for the Cameroon international if they are to sell

‘It’s hard to say because with FC Barcelona, I am still in very good relations with the president, the coaches,’ Onana told Canal+ Afrique.

‘As I said earlier, Barca is my home. If I have to go back, I will go back. But today we are still far from it. I’m the Ajax goalkeeper and we’ll see what happens at the end of the season.

ANDRE ONANA STATS

Appearances (all comps): 178

Goals conceded: 151

Clean sheets: 74

‘I only take care of the ball game, what happens at the stadium. The rest are my agents who manage.’

Onana is contracted until June 2022 at Ajax but it’s understood that the goalkeeper feels like he has reached the end of his time in Amsterdam.

Ajax want between £30-35million for Onana and it’s believed the Dutch club would rather strike a deal with Barcelona, given the long-running connection between the two clubs.

Onana would have to compete with the Catalans’ first choice keeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen for the No 1 shirt.

The Catalans’ first choice Marc-Andre ter Stegen is requesting a salary increase to £13m

Ter Stegen is in negotiations with Barcelona for a salary increase to £250,000 per week. If accepted, the 27-year-old would become one of the highest paid players at the Nou Camp with only Lionel Messi above him.

PSG have made enquiries about Onana as they are looking to dip into the goalkeeping market to find a credible second choice keeper to compete with the three time Champions’ League winner Keylor Navas.

Onana has also been linked with a move to the Premier League as Chelsea are keeping tabs on the Cameroon International.

Frank Lampard is said to be looking for a replacement after choosing to play Willy Caballero ahead of the world’s most expensive keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga earlier this year.

The Spaniard was dropped for Chelsea’s visit to the King Power Stadium to face Brendan Rodgers’ Leicester on February 1.

Kepa was dropped to the bench with Willy Caballero taking his place between the sticks

Of all goalkeepers to play over 1000 minutes in the Premier League this season Kepa has the worst save stats

Kepa, who cost Chelsea £71m in the summer of 2018, has struggled for any consistency this season and his future is under scrutiny.

Of all goalkeepers to play over 1000 minutes in the Premier League this season, Kepa is bottom in overall save percentage, save percentage for shots faced inside the box and in expected goals prevented – he has conceded 6.72 goals more than he should have.

Onana has played 178 times in all competitions since joining Ajax and kept 74 clean sheets.

He was a key figure the Eredivisie side’s run to the semi-finals of the Champions League last season and was nominated for best goalkeeper of 2019 at this year’s Ballon d’Or.
