Alan Shearer tears into ’embarrassing’ Man Utd after Mason Greenwood ‘leak’

Where could Greenwood relaunch his football career?

Alan Shearer has slammed Manchester United for their ‘embarrassing’ handling of Mason Greenwood’s situation. The Red Devils announced earlier this week that they will find a new club for the striker to continue his playing career away from Old Trafford.

However, wide-ranging reports suggested that United were initially planning to bring Greenwood back into United’s first team. It came following a six-month internal investigation into allegations of attempted rape, controlling behaviour and assault.

The Crown Prosecution Service dropped their own probe into the charges after a key witness withdrew in February. Greenwood – who denies the allegations – wrongly claimed he was ‘cleared’ of the allegations in a statement earlier this week.

Shearer has criticised both elements of United’s handling of the situation. The Premier League’s top scorer believes it is a result of a lack of leadership at the top of the club.

Speaking on the Rest Is Football podcast, the former striker said: “I think it’s been handled terribly from their side. The length of time that it took [to investigate] to then leaking it out last week that they were thinking of bringing him back into the fold.

“Seeing and hearing the reaction that it got, they suddenly then had to change their mind. And then there’s the wording of the statement, it was all pretty embarrassing.

“When I look at Manchester United at this moment in time, you look at the lack of leadership. You’ve got half of the [Glazer] family wanting to sell, some of the others not wanting to sell.

“They put the club up for sale a while ago now and then had a deadline for people to come in and make their offers.

“From that point of view, the lack of leadership from the very top… and then when that statement came out the other day, it was very poor on their part. There was a complete lack of leadership.”

According to The Athletic, United planned to bring Greenwood back into the club. A detailed plan supposedly included how head coach Ten Hag would answer questions on the subject, it is claimed.

However, they released a statement on Tuesday confirming that the 21-year-old has played his last game for the Red Devils. United will now find a new club for him to continue his playing career, although it is unclear if the deal will be a permanent or a loan.
