Antonio Conte’s appointment as manager of Tottenham on Tuesday has given the Premier League yet another charismatic boss. Fondly remembered for his antics at Chelsea, Conte is renowned for his hands-on approach to management – and it appears he has no filter when giving his players sex advice two years ago.

Conte, 52, became Tottenham manager on an 18-month contract on Tuesday after a three-year hiatus from the Premier League.

The Italian famously led Chelsea to a Premier League title in his first season at the club, before being sacked after finishing fifth in one of the worst title defences since the league’s inception.

He subsequently moved to Inter Milan a year later, where he led the side to their first Scuedetto in 11 years to break the spell of dominance Juventus had formed.

And it was in his first few months at the San Siro where Conte produced one of the more bizarre quotes in footballing history.

“During the season, I advise my players to have sex for short periods and with the minimum of effort,” he told L’Equipe in November 2019.

“[And they] better use positions where they are under their partners.

“And preferably, with their wives, because if with others, well, that needs extra action.”

It is yet to be distinguished what Conte meant by this.

However, it has added to the frantic persona that makes him likeable throughout the footballing world.

Conte could not wait to get started upon being appointed Tottenham boss.

“I am extremely happy to return to coaching, and to do so at a Premier League club that has the ambition to be a protagonist again,” he told Tottenham’s website.

“Tottenham Hotspur has state-of-the-art facilities and one of the best stadiums in the world.

“I can’t wait to start working to convey to the team and the fans the passion, mentality and determination that have always distinguished me, as a player and as a coach.

“Last summer our union did not happen because the end of my relationship with Inter was still too recent and emotionally too involved with the end of the season, so I felt that it wasn’t yet the right time to return to coaching.

“But the contagious enthusiasm and determination of Daniel Levy in wanting to entrust me with this task had already hit the mark. Now that the opportunity has returned, I have chosen to take it with great conviction.”
