Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta gives Gabriel Magalhaes verdict after completing £27m deal

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has hailed the signing of Gabriel Magalhaes, claiming the Brazilian has ‘outstanding attributes’.

Arteta has been looking to strengthen Arsenal’s defensive options after another season where they conceded too many goals compared to their rivals.

William Saliba has linked up his team-mates after a year with Saint-Etienne and is highly rated.

But the signing of Gabriel represents a major coup for the Gunners, with Manchester United, Everton and Napoli all interested in him.

Arsenal won the race and Gabriel will link up with his compatriots David Luiz, Gabriel Martinelli and their first signing of the window Willian.

And Arteta is delighted to have the 22-year-old at the club.

“We welcome Gabriel to Arsenal,” Arteta said.

“He has many qualities which will make us stronger as a defensive unit and as a team.

“He has proved with Lille that he is a defender with many outstanding attributes and we are looking forward to watching him grow as an Arsenal player.”

Technical director Edu added: “We are delighted to have signed Gabriel.

“He is a player we have been studying for a while and he was in demand from many clubs, so we are proud to have agreed and completed this transfer with Lille and the player.

“Gabriel is a player of high quality and Mikel and his coaches are looking forward to integrating him into the club.”

Gabriel will wear the No 6, worn famously by club legend Tony Adams.

After arriving from France, Gabriel has been in quarantine following the guidelines issued by the British government.

He is set to finish his time in isolation in the coming days and will be free to train with his new team-mates.

Arsenal have lined up three behind closed doors friendlies to prepare of the new season, which starts on September 12 with a London derby against promoted Fulham.
