How Arsenal came to Partey decision
Arsenal have been linked with three midfielders over the past week but they have opted to go for Thomas Partey over Houssem Aouar and Jorginho.
Sky Sports transfer expert Dharmesh Sheth has explained how the Gunners reached their conclusion.
When analysing the whole transfer saga, Sheth told Sky Sports News: “Chelsea’s Jorginho, not sure if that one is going to happen but Arsenal have retained an interest, Houssem Aouar from Lyon was the big one but Lyon have said all along that Arsenal’s offer was ‘timid’ and then the player came out and said he was staying.
“The one that was never batted was Atletico Madrid’s Thomas Partey.
“We know Arsenal have had an interest in him for the entire window, the one issue was whether they could match the release clause because Atletico will not negotiate with any club, let alone Arsenal, on the release, which is £45m.
“It is our understanding that Arsenal are now pushing again for Partey and there is an expectation, although it’s not 100 per cent, that they will meet that £45m release clause.
“All of the talk during the window was how Arsenal were going to generate that money. Today, they are looking at releasing some of those players to fund that move.”
Emery wanted Partey
Arsenal are closing in on the signing of Thomas Partey – which is set to leave former boss Unai Emery frustrated.
Arsenal have reportedly indicated to Atletico Madrid that they will pay Partey’s £45million release clause.
The Gunners have been linked with a move for the Ghana international throughout the summer transfer window.
However, it appears it is not the first time Arsenal have been interested in Partey.
The Athletic claim Arsenal wanted to sign the midfielder in Emery’s first transfer window in charge in 2018.
The Gunners instead signed Lucas Torreira from Sampdoria and Matteo Guendouzi from Lorient – two players who are finalising loan moves away from the Emirates today.
Arsenal plan to trigger Partey clause
Arsenal have launched a dramatic late move for Thomas Partey.
The Gunners are now trying to complete a last-gasp deal for the Atletico Madrid star, despite initially cooling their interest in favour of a move for Houssem Aouar.
Atletico have been firm all summer that if Arsenal want to sign Partey, they will have to pay his £45million release clause.
According to Goal, they have now made a deadline day swoop for the Ghanaian as they look to pull off a major coup in the final hours of a long transfer window.
Chelsea have also been linked with the powerhouse.
Arsenal had been hesitating on triggering the Atletico man’s release clause but it seems like they have finally made the decision to sign their top target.
Partey has been compared to Gunners legend Patrick Vieira.
Guendouzi and Torreira set for exits
Matteo Guendouzi is set to join Bundesliga side Hertha Berlin while Lucas Torreira is close to completing a loan move to Atletico Madrid.
Mikel Arteta is keen to let both players go as they are down the pecking order at the Emirates.
Guendouzi hasn’t played since June, when he clashed with Brighton’s Maupay at the end of the Gunners’ 2-1 defeat at the Amex.
Guendouzi then put in a transfer request and demanded to be sold, only to be told in no uncertain terms that he would be going nowhere.
Arteta has now changed his mind on the central midfielder.
Saliba to Fulham
Arsenal are willing to let William Saliba seal a deadline day loan move and the teenager could stay in the Premier League.
Unai Emery completed a £27million deal for the Frenchman in the summer of 2019 but he is yet to feature for the first team and now Mikel Arteta is keen to get him some regular playing time.
Saliba looks likely to join Premier League strugglers Fulham.
Arsenal beat the Cottagers 3-0 on the opening day of the season and the performance highlighted Scott Parker’s need for defensive reinforcements.
They shipped three goals once again this time last week in the 3-0 defeat to Aston Villa after conceding a further four goals at Leeds.
