Arsenal make huge final payment to Mesut Ozil – six months after Fenerbahce move

Arsenal have paid Mesut Ozil a massive sum of money despite the midfielder moving to Fenerbahce in January.

The Gunners reportedly paid a whopping £16.38million into Ozil’s account on June 30, having agreed to subsidise his wages when they desperately flogged him to Fenerbahce six months ago.

Ozil, 32, hadn’t played in almost a year for Arsenal and the club agreed to pay more than 90% of his wages for the first six months of his three-and-a-half year deal with the Turkish side.

The former Germany international is now officially off Arsenal’s books as they prepare for a huge rebuild ahead of the new season.

Ozil’s relationship with the Gunners hierarchy had completely disintegrated by the time the January window approached, leading the club to take a financial hit and end the toxic saga.

His missed around nine months of football with his last game for the club coming on March 7 last year after being banished from the first team set-up by manager Mikel Arteta.

The ex-Real Madrid maestro has been unable to replicate his former glory at Fenerbahce since making the move, having made 10 appearances for his new club in which he has failed to score.

He is set to earn considerably less now that the 2020/21 Super Lig season’s third-placed side take control of his full salary.

The end to the saga means Arsenal will have freed up some much-needed cash by finally removing Ozil’s mammoth wages from their accounts.

Arsenal are set for a huge summer of spending as they look to reclaim their position as one of England’s elite sides, having been strongly linked with a move for Brighton & Hove Albion’s Ben White and Benfica’s Nuno Tavares.
