Bernd Leno endured an evening to forget in Arsenal’s 2-1 win away at Rapid Vienna on Thursday, with many now questioning why Mikel Arteta allowed Emiliano Martinez to leave the Emirates.
The Gunners offloaded Martinez to Aston Villa in the summer despite his solid performances at the back end of last season, which proved crucial in their eventual FA Cup triumph.
He was only given the chance to flourish while No.1 goalkeeper Leno was out injured, nevertheless, meaning Arteta deemed him second choice again when the German returned to full fitness.
Instead of staying put and fighting for his place, Martinez decided to join Villa in search of first-team football – and a number of fans believe Arteta made the wrong decision.
Leno produced a howler in Arsenal’s opening Europa League victory against Vienna, allowing Taxiarchis Fountas to give the Austrian outfit liftoff when he gave the ball away inside his own area.
Fountas simply swept the ball past him to fire Vienna in front six minutes into the second half, meaning Arteta was forced to introduce star striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
David Luiz first headed home to bring the Gunners level with 20 minutes remaining, before Aubameyang turned in what proved the winner four minutes later – pulling Leno out of trouble at the Allianz Stadion.
The Arsenal shot-stopper was fortunate to have only given one goal away, having also made two other glaring errors which almost cost the visitors once more.
And a number of fans have taken to Twitter to question the Gunners’ decision to sell Martinez, insisting the Argentine is a better goalkeeper than Leno.
One said: “Yet another Leno mistake. Martinez would never”.
“Bring back Martinez @Arsenal,” wrote another.
A third commented: “Yeah Martinez was the better choice of goalkeeper lol”.

“I wish Martinez was still at the club,” posted another supporter.
While one simply said: “Shouldn’t have sold Martinez”.
Leno will hope to bounce back from a disappointing night’s work at the weekend, with Leicester due to visit the Emirates on Sunday.
