Arsenal star Cedric Soares appears to have proven his doubters wrong and won over fans with a brilliant moment in the win over Newcastle on Monday night.

Cedric was handed a very rare start in the 3-0 thumping of Steve Bruce’s Toon side, his first of the season in the Premier League.

The Portugal international was brought in for £5m over the summer from Southampton after a solid six month loan spell last season.

But fans so far seem to have been unimpressed by his performances on the pitch, with the majority of his game time coming in the Europa League against poorer opposition.

However, Cedric was one of the standout performers for Arsenal against Newcastle, even setting up Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for his side’s third and final goal with some smart play down the right.

But it was a moment earlier in the game that appeared to grab most fans’ attention after the full-time whistle.

Earlier in the second half, Cedric pulled off a quite sensational backheel while being put under pressure on the touchline, nutmegging the defending Jamal Lewis in the process.

The trickery helped to set Saka off down the wing and launch an attack which Arsenal almost scored from but for a fine save from Karl Darlow.

A clip of the moment was flagged up on the r/Gunners Reddit feed as fans were left purring over Cedric’s piece of skill and his potential to give Hector Bellerin a run for his money as Arsenal’s starting right-back.

“This would have been immortalised if the chance had led to a goal,” one wrote in the comments of the video.

A second added: “People who said [Pablo] mari and cedric were poor buys. Wonder where they are now.”

“Great option to rotate with Bellerin,” added a third.

While a fourth put: “Hah! Didn’t catch this during the game. Lad had a very, very good game.”

“He was really good today,” another put forward. “Even when he hasn't starred, he hasn't made a ton of mistakes either. Solid depth signing in my opinion.”

And a sixth opined: “I thought Cedric had a really good game tonight and I’ve seen a lot from him that I like in the chances he’s had on the pitch for us.”
