Arsenal will be hoping for a more successful season when the 2021/22 campaign gets underway.

The Gunners slumped to an eighth-placed finish in the Premier League for the second year running and missed out on European football for the first time in 25 years.

Summer signings are likely to be a priority for manager Mikel Arteta as he aims to fire his side up the Premier League table.

One player who could make a surprise return to the team is midfielder Matteo Guendouzi, who has spent this season on loan at German side Hertha Berlin.

The Frenchman has recently changed all of his social media profiles to of himself in the famous red and white shirt, suggesting he is ready to fight for his place in the team.

Guendouzi was frozen out by Arteta after clashing with Brighton forward Neal Maupay at the end of the 2019/20 season, missing the remaining eight matches of the campaign as a result.

Should the 22-year-old be given a chance, the Gunners could have a new-look side taking to the pitch next season.

Goalkeeper Bernd Leno is expected to stay at the club despite reports suggesting he could be on his way out. At left-back, Kieran Tierney is another guaranteed starter after a positive first campaign in north London.

Arsenal's transfer business will determine how the rest of their defence shapes up next year, with interest being expressed in Brighton's Ben White and Norwich City right-back Max Aarons.

David Luiz's departure means the Gunners are likely to be in the market for a new central defender, meanwhile Hector Bellerin's expected exit could prompt a move for Aarons.

The midfield department could well become a competitive area of the pitch for Arsenal next season.

Brighton's Yves Bissouma continues to be linked with a transfer to the Emirates and could complement Thomas Partey and Guendouzi as part of a three-man midfield.

In attack, there are fewer changes expected.

Buyako Saka and Emile Smith Rowe are likely to be given further opportunities to shine after demonstrating their first-team quality, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang completing the frontline.

Alexandre Lacazette and Nicolas Pepe would be forced to fight for a place in the starting-eleven, should Arteta opt for such a line-up.

Arsenal’s 2021/22 Potential XI – Leno; Aarons, White, Holding, Tierney; Bissouma, Guendouzi, Partey; Smith Rowe, Saka, Aubameyang.
