Arteta fiercely interrogated on Aubameyang situation in awkward press conference

Mikel Arteta awkwardly skirted around any questions surrounding Pierre Emerick Aubameyang, after the Arsenal captain was dropped from the squad for 'disciplinary' reasons.

Arsenal ran out 3-0 winners against Southampton, as Alexandre Lacazette, Martin Odegaard, and Gabriel all found the net.

The Gunners moved up to fifth with the win, and they are now just one point outside of the Champions League spots.

However, to the annoyance of Arteta, most of his post-match press conference questions were focused on the Gabonese international.

The Spaniard engaged with the first couple of questions before flat out refusing to answer the next five, instead choosing to speak about the game.

When asked why Aubameyang was out of the squad, Arteta simply said: "It was a disciplinary breach, and that’s why he was out of the squad."

Arteta was then asked about his captaincy: "Let’s talk about the game.

"I tried to explain why it was, and I did it frankly. I’m not going to say anything else, I’m going to focus on the performance and the quality that was on the pitch."

Arteta answers then failed to engage with the question, and when asked if Aubameyang was available to play, the Spaniard responded: "I am really happy that we won 3-0, and we move onto the next one against West Ham."

The Athletic have revealed that the Gabonese international missed out on the game because he was late to return from a trip.

Aubameyang had been given permission to fly abroad for a personal matter.

However, he returned later than agreed, which led to his exclusion from the squad.

The 32-year-olds late return had implications for Arsenal’s COVID-19 protocols.
