Arteta insists he can get misfiring Aubameyang back to his best

‘We’re all missing a spark, it isn’t just Auba’: Mikel Arteta insists he can get misfiring Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang back to his best… but admits the striker’s Arsenal team-mates also ‘have to do more’

  • Mikel Arteta said his Arsenal team need a ‘moment of spark’ to win more games
  • The Spaniard said Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang needs more help to score goals
  • Arteta said his mix of old and young players can see them past Newcastle United

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will not start scoring goals again for Arsenal without the help of his team-mates.

The Gabonese striker has struck only three Premier League goals this season, a stunning dip in form after he was awarded a massive new contract when he scored 55 times in 85 matches from signing in January 2018 and lifting the FA Cup at the end of last season.

Aubameyang, 31, is only seven years younger than manager Mikel Arteta, who is convinced his captain has the experience to get out of his slump despite admitting that he needs more from his star man.

‘Yes, but it’s not about individuals,’ Arteta insisted. ‘It’s about what we do as a collective and we have to do more in this.

‘And, then, for sure, when you look at these games and how they are won, a lot of times it is because of individuals as opposed to collective actions.

‘It is a moment of spark that has to open up these sorts of games – and then the game gets much easier and you get it where you want.

‘We have missed that, but it isn’t just Auba.’

Monday night’s visit of Newcastle United is Arsenal’s third game in eight days against a side renowned for their rear guard action.

Arsenal could only score in extra-time in last weekend’s FA Cup tie against Steve Bruce’s well-drilled Geordies, drew a blank against Crystal Palace in midweek and are now under pressure to start scoring again.

At least Aubameyang has a good record to recall against Newcastle, having scored in his last three appearances against them.

Arteta could again be missing defenders Pablo Mari and Kieran Tierney through injury, but is confident his mixture of youth and experience can extend Arsenal’s run to six matches without a defeat.

He added: ‘It doesn’t make a lot of difference between the old and new. They are all good players who should be able to contribute in this way.

‘Because they are young doesn’t mean they have no responsibility. They are picked in the team because they deserve to play more than somebody who is on the bench.

‘I don’t differentiate with age. Everybody has to have the approach to the game that I am here and I am going to win it for the team.’
