Baddiel and Skinner to record festive version of Three Lions to mark World Cup

David Baddiel and Frank Skinner are releasing a Christmas remake of their anthem Three Lions.

Three Lions on a Sleigh will pay tribute to the England Lionesses winning Euro 2022 – as well as coinciding with the men’s bid to take the World Cup in Qatar.

David said: “Me and Frank said, ‘Let’s rewrite it with some Christmassy lyrics and some comedy’. And we thought we’d write about the Lionesses winning, update it a bit.

“We filmed the video the other day. It was basically the first video we ever shot in 1996 – it’s a version of that, but with us much, much older.”

The comics reunited with The Lightning Seeds, who they recorded the original with ahead of Euro 96, with the anthem sung by England fans ever since.

It comes despite Baddiel stating after the Lionesses' Euros win in the summer that the track could be retired, telling BBC Radio: “You know, I’m very happy to think that the song would be, in a way, put to bed.”

Baddiel had tweeted after the game: "Home. In fact, it’s come home. A sentence I thought I’d never write. I’ve gone. Thank you Lionesses."

He added: "It's the same game, played by women or played by men. What's totally brilliant in the last few weeks is a sense that the country can get behind it in entirely the same way. We've won, not the women have won. We've won."

England's will begin their pursuit of a first World Cup since triumph since 1966 when they take on Iran on November 21, followed by the USA and Wales. Expect Three Lions to be belted out by the travelling England supporters at every opportunity along the way.
