Barcelona are hoping to sign Eric Garcia from Manchester City this summer.
The Catalan giants are hoping to strengthen their squad as the new era under Ronald Koeman begins, which will included Lionel Messi for at least one more full season.
Club president Josep Maria Bartomeu refused to allow Messi the right to leave the club for free earlier this month, arguing that the clause in the player’s contract expired back in June.
City had been the huge favourites to secure the signature of Messi has he been able to leave Spain, thanks in part to his good relationship with former manager Pep Guardiola.
Although the Premier League runners-up may have been left disappointed by the aforementioned stance, they find themselves in a difficult position regarding the player that Barcelona desire.
Garcia, 19, has turned down a new contract at the Eithad, having played in the youth set-up at Barcelona between 2008 and 2017.
“It is true I have told the club I do not intend to extend my contract beyond 2021,” he told Marca.
“But I will return to Manchester when I am finished on international duty with Spain, and I am focused on next season with City.”
Although Garcia does have another year on his contract in Manchester, Guardiola could choose to sell up and reinvest as he looks to build a side for the future.
That has interested Barcelona, who have made a bid of £7.2m to try and tempt City into a sale.
That has been reported by Spanish outlet Sport, who have added that City value their central defender at £36m.
Guardiola said of his future: “I don’t have any updates. He has one more year on his contract, if Barcelona want him they must call him.

“We are going to try convince him to stay here for many, many, many years.
“Yeah, I am confident he will stay, but in the end it is his decision. He knows we want him, but it was the same with Leroy [Sane].
“We want him, but he doesn’t want to stay, we cannot do anything else.
“He knows, his agent knows, his family knows that we want him. If Barcelona want him, they have to call Txiki [Begiristain].”
