The BBC was left red-faced after Burnley manager Victor Kompany no-showed their coverage of England’s World Cup opener against Iran on Monday. Kompany was due to be a big part of the broadcaster’s coverage this winter, but a visa nightmare reportedly delayed his arrival in Qatar.

Beeb bosses would have wanted the Manchester City legend’s insight as England got their 2022 campaign underway, with five of Pep Guardiola’s players in Gareth Southgate’s squad. However, according to the Mail, he couldn’t make it to the Khalifa International Stadium amid issues entering the Gulf state.

The report claims Kompany suffered an issue with his visa headshot, sparked by the digital system, which left him stuck in England. However, the 36-year-old has resolved the problem and is expected to soon join the BBC’s star-studded team for the rest of the tournament.

Gary Lineker, Rio Ferdinand, Micah Richards, Alan Shearer, Alex Scott and Didier Drogba are among those spearheading the BBC’s coverage this winter. And Kompany will hope to be a part of Belgium’s curtain-raiser against Canada on Wednesday after pausing his duties as Burnley boss.

The Premier League-winning defender retired from full-time action in 2019, leaving Man City to start his coaching career at Anderlecht as a player-manager. He became permanent manager a year later and enjoyed a two-year term before replacing Sean Dyche at Turf Moor in the summer.

His Clarets outfit sit top of the Championship after 21 games, ending the first section of the season with a 3-0 thrashing of bitter Lancashire rivals Blackburn Rovers to move three points ahead of Sheffield United. Once he returns from the Middle East, Kompany will take Burnley to Old Trafford to face Manchester United in the Carabao Cup last 16.
