Calls to ban England fan who shone laser at Kasper Schmeichel before penalty

Calls have grown for the England fan who shone a laser at Denmark goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel to be banned.

Harry Kane’s goal, which came from a deflected ball when the shot-stopper saved the captain’s penalty, was the winner in the Three Lions’ 2-1 extra-time victory to reach the Euro 2020 final.

But the aftermath has been shrouded in controversy, with charges being sanctioned by UEFA over three separate incidents.

With boos during the Danish national anthem and fireworks let off outside Wembley, viewers were left shocked when footage emerged of a laser being shone at Schmeichel.

Cameras caught the shot-stopper with a green light over his face as he was preparing to stop Kane from the penalty spot.

The clip soon went viral across social media – and calls have grown louder for the supporter to be banned from attending any more games.

“I hope they catch this moron and ban him for life – it’s an utter disgrace and shows England in a bad light,” one said.

Another commented: “The laser incident is unforgivable and the perpetrator should get a life ban.”

While Stan Collymore, who made three England appearances in the 1990s, wrote: “If anyone shone a laser pen at Schmeichel, they want banning for life.”

And a fourth wanted the fan out for longer, adding: “Whoever showed that laser to Schmeichel’s face deserves a permanent ban from Wembley and further England games.”

ITV host Mark Pougatch also remonstrated with the supporter for their actions.

He said during the broadcaster’s coverage of the Euro 2020 semi-final: “One thing we have spotted just as Harry Kane took the penalty and which is completely unacceptable and ridiculous…look, someone’s got a laser pen in the stands.

“Whoever they are they are an idiot, him or her, and we can just hope that it didn’t put Kasper Schmeichel off because it’s stupid and he doesn’t deserve that.

“That sort of thing, nobody wants to see.”

England will have to wait to discover the punishment following a review by the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Board.
