Chelsea boss Graham Potter has been criticised for his comments on Arsenal following Sunday’s clash at Stamford Bridge. Potter was full of praise for the Gunners after their 1-0 victory but Ray Parlour says he focused on the wrong team too much.

Gabriel’s second-half goal gave Arsenal the three points they needed to move back to the top of the Premier League table. Mikel Arteta’s side were thoroughly deserving of the win despite the narrow margin.

It was Potter’s first home defeat as Chelsea boss but his second loss in a row in the top flight. The former Brighton manager was effusive with his praise for Arsenal in his post-match press conference.

But Gunners legend Parlour did not believe that was the right reaction and says the 47-year-old should have spoken more about his own team. Parlour told talkSPORT: “I listened to the interview after, all he did was talk about Arsenal and how good they are. You can’t do that, you’re at Chelsea.

“This is Arsenal vs Chelsea. Chelsea have won multiple trophies over the years, the standards are so high.

“That’s the problem you’ve got. You can’t be coming out and praising the other team. They didn’t lay a glove on Arsenal.

“How many times did Arsenal nick the ball back when [Chelsea] players were looking up, and there’s no movement, there’s no-one running in behind? They can nick the ball back and then suddenly you’re back at Chelsea’s back four again.”

Potter gave big credit to Arsenal after the match. He claimed it showed up the big gulf currently between the two sides.

Potter said: “We played against a team in a really good moment and a confident team, so credit to them. We have to look at where the two teams are at.

“Arsenal are in a good moment and have worked together for a long time. We’re in a different phase.

“We lacked quality but the effort was there and we were beaten by the better team today. We huffed and puffed but you could see the difference between the two teams in terms of confidence, structure and work together.

“We’re not in a fantastic moment as we speak and in the end Arsenal deserved to win because they were the better team overall. We have to take that and use it as motivation to improve. Arsenal defend well, they press well and make it difficult for you to create chances.”
