Performances put in during Euro 2020 will have told managers around the continent a lot more about the players they currently have at their disposal. For Italy, Jorginho was majestic as he dictated the tempo of high-stakes games from the middle of the park, suggesting that Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel may be wise to keep his hands in his pockets when it comes to the transfer of Declan Rice.

It has been a busy few days for Chelsea, with reports stating that the club are preparing a British-record bid for Erling Haaland, and others claiming the player already has an agreement with Real Madrid in 2022.

While the latter will come as devastating news for the Chelsea boardroom, it would certainly leave a huge wad of money untouched for them to invest later in the summer.

One of the things which Tuchel and transfer chief Marina Granovskaia may be tempted to do is slam some serious cash on the table to attain long-term target Declan Rice.

With a huge price-tag pinned to him by West Ham, he would undoubtedly set the Blues back a pretty penny, amounting to at least £60million.

There is no doubting that Rice’s stock has soared since the Euros where he showed tremendous fighting spirit and confidence on the ball, all the way to the final.

However, his Italian counterpart Jorginho was equally as impressive as he battled to a penalty shootout victory to see his country lift the trophy.

The Brazilian-born midfielder flew somewhat under the radar since his big-money move to Chelsea, then managed by Maurizio Sarri, with many seeing him as nothing more than a sideways passer.

Having observed him over a longer period, his willingness to get on the ball and keep play moving has made him a crucial cog in Chelsea’s midfield.

His former boss Sarri even claimed he should be in Balon D’or contention, saying: “Fans and journalists struggled to understand this boy’s game.

“Then he exploded in popularity in England too, now I have seen that he made the captain. He deserves it.

“He is so good and intelligent that he makes everything seem easy, rarely anything spectacular remains in your eyes. This is its greatness.”

The player’s agent, Joao Santos, has confirmed that some of Europe’s biggest clubs are making enquiries in the wake of his Euro 2020 team of the tournament inclusion.

In which case, Chelsea’s attention should not be so focused on breaking the bank to bring in a player like Rice when they already have a perfectly capable midfield anchor in Jorginho.

With Italian giants like Juventus reportedly keen, they may have just as stern a battle in keeping hold of the Euro 2020 winner as they would in trying to prise Rice away from the London Stadium.

If nothing else, seeing Jorginho shine on the biggest stage should alert Chelsea fans, and indeed the rest of the Premier League, to what they have at their disposal.

Money is sure to be spent at Stamford Bridge over the coming weeks, but bringing in a player to bolster a position where they are sufficiently stocked may not be the smartest of decisions.
