Chelsea will seek advice from Manchester City on how to beat Borussia Dortmund following the Champions League last-16 draw. The Blues will play against the Bundesliga side in a two-legged affair in February and March next year.

Chelsea and Dortmund have never played each other in a competitive match before. But Monday’s draw in Nyon saw them pulled out together.

Chelsea topped Group E with four wins from their six matches. Dortmund were runners up in Group G, finishing five points behind Manchester City.

City beat Dortmund 2-1 at home in September before a goalless draw in Germany late last month. That aggregate score would be enough for Chelsea to make it through to the quarter-final stage.

Chelsea’s director of football operations David Barnard is looking forward to facing Dortmund. And he is hoping to harbour some tips from City about their opponents.

Barnard told reporters: “Dortmund is one team that we’re yet to play in the Champions League, so we’re looking forward to going there. Man City were in their group so we hope to be talking to our friends at City to get a little bit of insight into Dortmund from that point of view.”

Chelsea are aiming to win the Champions League for a third time. Graham Potter’s side already seem to be out of the Premier League title race, sitting 13 points behind leaders Arsenal following Sunday’s loss at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues therefore may see cup competitions as their best chance of winning silverware this season. But they face the toughest start in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday as they travel to serial winners City.

City have won the competition six times in the last nine seasons, including four in a row under Pep Guardiola. Chelsea made it to the final last season but lost to Liverpool on penalties.

Wednesday’s clash will be the first meeting between the two sides this season. Chelsea lost both times to City last term and haven’t beaten Guardiola’s side since the Champions League final in May 2021.

City will also face German opposition in the last-16. RB Leipzig were pulled out to play against the English champions.

The first leg of the ties will be played either week commencing February 13 or 20, with the return legs the week commencing March 6 or 13.
