Mason Mount has been dropped to the bench by Thomas Tuchel for his first game in charge of Chelsea against Wolves.
Tuchel was only appointed Blues head coach on Tuesday following the sacking of Frank Lampard, who was relieved of his duties on Monday amid a nightmare run of five defeats in eight Premier League matches.
The Stamford Bridge faithful have not taken Lampard’s dismissal too kindly, with some supporters showing their disgust at the decision by unfurling a banner at Stamford Bridge that reads: “Circus continues”.
And to add to their frustrations, Tuchel has got his Chelsea reign off to a controversial start by dropping fan-favourite Mount for their clash with Wolves.
The German has made a number of bold calls in his starting XI, giving captain Cesar Azpilicueta the nod ahead of popular youngster Reece James.
Edouard Mendy has been deployed in goal, Antonio Rudiger and Thiago Silva are starting at centre-back and Ben Chilwell has kept his place at left-back.
Mateo Kovacic partners Jorginho in the middle of the park, while Hakim Ziyech, Kai Havertz and Callum Hudson-Odoi start in attacking midfield.
Tuchel has also opted for Olivier Giroud upfront instead of £54million recruit Timo Werner and academy graduate Tammy Abraham.
Nevertheless, his most controversial decision by far is leaving Mount out of the side.
The 22-year-old was a key member of Lampard’s squad and one of few Chelsea players who could hold his head high over the past month despite their disappointing run.
He was even handed the captain’s armband by Lampard in his final match as Blues head coach on Sunday, leading them to a 3-1 win over Luton in the fourth round of the FA Cup.
Chelsea fans are not best pleased with Tuchel’s decision to axe Mount from his starting line-up, taking to Twitter to express their frustrations.
