Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku has been included on Bayern Munich’s four-man list of potential targets to replace Robert Lewandowski if the latter joins Barcelona over the coming months, according to reports. The Catalan giants are thought to have entered preliminary talks with Lewandowski’s representatives in recent weeks, with the 33-year-old yet to commit his long-term future to Bayern Munich by signing a new and improved contract.

Lewandowski’s current deal at the Allianz Arena is set to expire at the end of next season but it remains to be seen whether Barcelona will be able to bring him to the Nou Camp for a cut-price fee in advance of the new campaign. It seems as though Bayern Munich have already started planning for life without their prized asset by identifying Lukaku as one of four potential replacements for the Polish marksman, according to Bild.

The report claims that Lukaku has been named alongside Darwin Nunez, Patrik Schick and Sebastian Haller on Bayern Munich’s shortlist ahead of the summer transfer window. Haller is believed to be the club’s priority target and is said to have already been contacted by those in power at Bayern Munich to scope out his wage demands.

However, there is said to be every chance that Lukaku could emerge as another option for the German heavyweights if a move for Haller cannot be engineered over the next few months. The Chelsea striker has endured a torrid spell at Stamford Bridge since rejoining the Blues from Inter Milan at the start of the season and has been regularly linked with a premature exit over the course of this season.

Lukaku has only managed to score a total of five Premier League goals since the beginning of the campaign and has forfeited his place in Chelsea’s starting line-up to Kai Havertz in recent months. Bayern Munich would need to cover Lukaku’s exorbitant wage demands if they opt to chase a move for his services in the summer, with the 28-year-old currently picking up around £325,000 per week in west London.

It remains to be seen whether Lukaku will eventually leave Chelsea for Bayern Munich over the coming months, with the likelihood of any move for the Blues man set to be decided by the future of Lewandowski. The German club’s sporting director, Hasan Salihamidzic, recently insisted that he is eager to retain Lewandowski for the foreseeable future but admitted that his sky-high wages could soon emerge as a potential stumbling block.

“Something will happen soon, the only thing I know is that there will be a meeting,” Salihamidzic told Sky Germany earlier this month. “Of course [we want to keep him at the club].

“Lewandowski is highly appreciated but he’s our top earner at the club. We also have to look at our financial possibilities and how much money we have.

“We have all the time in the world. We have the best striker in the world and we’re proud of that.”
