Chelsea are hopeful of signing AC Milan goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma on a free transfer this summer, although the Blues are likely to face stiff competition from Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain for the 22-year-old’s signature, according to reports. Donnarumma will leave the San Siro giants upon the expiry of his contract after failing to agree new terms, and is likely to have no shortage of options ahead of next season.

The Italian stopper burst onto the scene as a fresh-faced teenager in 2015, going on to consolidate his spot between the sticks with his ability to deliver consistently impressive performances.

However, his future has been in doubt for some time after rejecting a number of contract offers made by Milan over the course of the season.

Donnarumma is now poised to depart in the coming months, with Lille’s Mike Maignan arriving for an £11.7million fee to replace him earlier this week.

Despite Donnarumma’s reluctance to continue with Milan, he looks set to secure a favourable move away ahead of the new campaign, with Chelsea one of three clubs harbouring a keen interest in his signature.

The Blues have been tracking his situation for some time and have stepped up their interest since his impending departure was confirmed, according to 90min.

The report claims that the west London club believe they have a ‘genuine shot’ at landing Donnarumma this summer, with the immediate future of Kepa Arrizabalaga far from certain despite the Spaniard’s contract running until 2025.

The latter has reportedly been instructed to find a new team after failing to live up to expectations since his £72m move from Athletic Bilbao in 2018.

Despite their confidence over a move for Donnarumma, Chelsea chiefs are said to be concerned about the potential lure of Juventus, with the Milan goalkeeper believed to be keen on staying in Italy.

However, he is not prepared to rule out the possibility of a move to Stamford Bridge as he is believed to be intrigued by the idea of testing himself in the Premier League.

Chelsea are said to have been speaking to Donnarumma’s agent, Mino Raiola, for a number of months and are unlikely to pass up the opportunity to sign a player of his quality and potential for nothing this summer.

Kepa’s likely departure will leave them in need of a viable back-up option to play in cup competitions and deputise for Edouard Mendy in the Premier League when required, though Donnarumma would hope to displace the Senegalese stopper as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper.

Milan sporting director Paolo Maldini confirmed that Donnarumma will be leaving the club earlier this month, with the former Italy defender expressing his regret over the situation and wishing his player the best of luck for the future.

“I think we have to thank all the players who have made this incredible season,” Maldini told Milan’s Twitch channel.

“Gigio was a leader and often a captain. People have a hard time understanding what it means to be a professional who must be ready to change clubs.

“It’s difficult to accept, it is increasingly difficult to find careers. We must have respect for those who have given so much to Milan, who have never disrespected us. The paths diverge, I can only wish him the best.

“It was difficult then, now it’s even more difficult. Being able to find a footballer who has ambitious qualities, finding an environment that allows him to fulfil his ambitious requests is difficult.”
