Thomas Tuchel’s bid to sign a central defender failed in the summer. But his determination to add to his squad could mean that an even more experienced star is brought in over the winter months.
Sevilla’s Jules Kounde was linked with a move to Chelsea throughout the summer transfer window, only for a move to be scuppered at the final hurdle.
A deal was close to being agreed with the Andalusian outfit, but in the end it was to no avail as Kounde stayed at Sevilla for the foreseeable future.
It remains to be seen whether a deal can be done to sign the Frenchman – although, if reports are to be believed, Chelsea have their eyes on another target in Marquinhos.
With Sevilla wanting £65million for Kounde, Chelsea chiefs have apparently decided to aim a bit higher and make a bit for the world-class Brazilian.
The Paris Saint-Germain defender joined from Roma in 2013 for a fee of £25m as a 19-year-old.
This was reportedly the highest fee ever paid for a teenager at the time, although that has since been decimated.
Yet after eight fruitful years at PSG, the Brazilian may feel it is time for a new challenge in west London.
RMC claim that the defender was subject to transfer interest from Chelsea in the summer, with a fee of £85m reported, and Chelsea evidently willing to spend big for his signature.
And although the player is reportedly keen to stay in Paris, a follow-up offer isn’t off the table for January.

However, if he doesn’t want to join Tuchel’s men, then a move for Kounde may still be in the offing – with the French defender reportedly angered at the fact his move to Stamford Bridge didn’t happen.
Tuchel spoke about Chelsea’s failed pursuit of Kounde, stating he is happy with the squad that Chelsea’s transfer chief Marina Granovskaia has put together.
“Marina was in charge and she is the best person who can be in charge,” Tuchel said to the press.

“We knew things can happen, things can happen late, and we were also very aware of the situation that, maybe, nothing happens at all.
“I assured everybody that I’m also happy if we cannot bring a player in. We will find the solution within the squad. We will push players within the squad.
“But it was clear we tried for Kounde and Saul and it was very, very late, but it was a very, very smooth transfer window because I had full concentration on training and on my team.”
