Chelsea defenders will be biting their nails as they watch on at the club’s pursuit of Sevilla centre-back Jules Kounde. The 22-year-old would cost an extreme amount of money and would likely slot straight into the starting XI, which may have negative implications for a number of stars.

According to reports, the club have held positive talks to sign Kounde, with personal terms at an advanced stage.

The Frenchman’s priority is supposedly to play in the Champions League, rendering Chelsea the ideal destination given their European triumph in May.

A £30million deal, plus Kurt Zouma, is reportedly being worked on, which could spell bad news for three Chelsea defenders. Express Sport takes a look at who they might be.

Andreas Christensen

It is easy to forget the rocky season endured by Christensen last campaign, given he rounded it off with a Champions League final appearance and took Denmark to the semi-finals of Euro 2020.

Before that, he only managed 17 Premier League appearances, with the likes of Thiago Silva often preferred in the middle of a back three.

Having been with Chelsea since the age of 16, Christensen has done well to be one of the chosen few to successfully make their way up from the youth ranks.

Although he has impressed at times, particularly for a slender defender, the Dane has never been a nailed on regular, and that is unlikely to change after the arrival of Kounde.

Cesar Azpilicueta

Chelsea’s Mr. Consistent has hit over 40 appearances in every single season since signing in 2012.

Now at over 400 for the club, the Spaniard was one of Tuchel’s regulars last campaign, while his versatility comes in useful either as a defensive-minded right-back or on the right side of a back three.

Unfortunately, given Kounde’s experience at both right-back and centre-back, Azpilicueta may have a direct fight on his hands with the incoming Frenchman.

At 31-years-old, Tuchel could look towards Kounde as Azpilicueta’s long-term replacement, which may result in him being gradually phased out of the side.

Kurt Zouma

With Zouma reported to be on the table as part of the deal to bring Kounde to Stamford Bridge, his Chelsea career is quite literally on the chopping block.

Having signed as a youngster from Ligue 1, the 26-year-old has been in and out of the Chelsea side for years.

The 6ft 3in destroyer notched five Premier League goals last season, and his physical prowess would make him a useful asset for Julen Lopetegui at Sevilla.

Kounde’s arrival could spell bad news for Zouma in terms of his Chelsea career, but he could end up getting more game time at a side who were surprise entrants into the La Liga title race last season.
