Cristiano Ronaldo interested in joining Atletico Madrid

Cristiano Ronaldo is desperate to win the Champions League and is interested in joining Atletico Madrid this summer… but their fans are reluctant to welcome someone who taunted them and inflicted pain for nine seasons while at bitter rivals Real

  • Cristiano Ronaldo is open to joining Atletico Madrid during the transfer window
  • But, the Spanish giants would need to sell a big name player to make it happen
  • Even then the fans would still need to be won over after his spell at Real Madrid
  • Ronaldo is keen to join a club with a chance of winning the Champions League

Cristiano Ronaldo is open to joining Atletico Madrid but the club would need to sell a big name player to make it happen, and even then supporters would need to be won over by someone who made them suffer for nine seasons in a Real Madrid shirt.

Ronaldo is desperate enough to join a club with a chance of winning the Champions League that he would reduce wage demands but despite claims him moving to Atletico Madrid would boost the club’s merchandising revenue too many Atleti fans are against the idea for that to be a clear cut certainty.

Not only did Ronaldo score more goals against Atletico than almost any other team in Spain but he was not always kind to Real Madrid’s neighbours. In 2019 after facing them as a Juventus player he gestured that he had won five Champions Leagues and the club had won none, as he helped the Italian side knockout Diego Simeone’s team.

Ronaldo also taunted Simeone by imitating the crotch-grabbing goal celebration the Argentine coach had used in the first leg. Simeone is unlikely to be fazed by that, but the supporters, who had jeered Ronaldo throughout the two legs, have not forgotten his ‘you’ve never won what it’ jibe.

‘Why do we want him now when he is no longer at his best, and when he was at his best he disrespected us,’ was one opinion typical of many supporters. Ronaldo is desperate to win the Champions League again but his dig that Atleti had never won it make it difficult for him to join the club.

Ronaldo has broken the records for most goals and most performances in the Champions League but that is not enough for him. He wants to set the bar so high his bests will remain unmatched for years to come.

But, Diego Simeone would have to sell would of his big name players to be able to sign Ronaldo

Ronaldo would also need to win over the Atletico supporters after playing for Real Madrid

He’s 15 goals ahead of Lionel Messi in the Champions League goal stakes and six ahead of Iker Casillas in terms of games played. He needs to be in the competition to keep racking up the numbers. He knows that and so does his agent Jorge Mendes.

At first Ronaldo’s super agent was targeting the best teams in Europe. But slowly but surely Real Madrid Chelsea, Bayern Munich and Barcelona began distancing themselves from his signing.

He is 37 and for all that his personal numbers last season were good, Manchester United did not thrive with him leading the line. The allure has faded for all that his incredible professionalism means he remains a supreme athlete and goalscorer.

Ronaldo managed to score 451 times in 438 competitive appearances with Real Madrid

The Portugal international has played against Atletico Madrid more times than any other opponent in his club career, scoring a remarkable 25 goals against them

So now the club’s he is being pushed towards are in a category just below Bayern and Madrid. Atletico Madrid are not well placed to invest this summer. They have just signed a 10-year new sponsorship deal that will mean their stadium will now be called Civitas Metropolitano.

They have also unveiled plans for a new training ground. But they admitted they needed to sell before the end of their financial year to avoid closing with losses.

It’s an open secret that Alvaro Morata is not the striker of choice for Simeone. If the former Chelsea forward were to move on this summer it could open the way for Atletico to register Ronaldo but it would still leave them with the task of persuading supporters the Portuguese’s goal would make it worth them swallowing their pride.

He has also registered nine assists against the Spanish side and picked up 11 yellow cards

Also, every knockout Champions League tie that Atletico Madrid lost between 2014 and 2019 was at the hands of a side containing Cristiano

Mendes has an excellent relationship with Atletico. He moved Joao Felix there for a club record fee and has Jan Oblak and Thomas Lemar both at the club.

If anyone can move Ronaldo to the the arch rivals of his former club then it’s Mendes. But Atletico supporters are not easily swayed. They were slow to welcome back Antoine Griezmann last season after he had left them for Barcelona.

If Ronaldo were their ticket to another Champions League final then minds might be easier to change. But he has not reached the European Cup final since leaving Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid supporters don’t really believe he would be the difference. He was a trophies guarantee once – but when he was, he was beating them in finals and denying them silverware.
