Dan Walker steps down as presenter of BBC’s Football Focus after 12 years

Dan Walker is set to step down as the presenter of popular BBC show Football Focus at the end of the season.

The 44-year-old first started on the show for the 2009/10 campaign, but will make his final appearance on the last day of the current season on 22 May.

Walker will continue to present BBC Breakfast and for BBC Sport, including at this summer’s Tokyo Olympics.

"It has been an amazing 12 years and I have loved every second of it," Walker said. "I am so proud of the job we’ve done, the changes we’ve made and issues we’ve looked at while the football landscape changed immeasurably.

"I’d like to say thank you to the amazing team at Focus who put so much into the show each week and thank you to the audience for tuning in every Saturday.”

Philip Bernie, Head of TV at BBC Sport, added: “Dan has been exceptional as presenter of Football Focus for the last 12 years.

"He is a top-class broadcaster who has brought authority, wit and fun to the show, always working so well with such warmth with the guests on the show.

"We are extremely grateful for all he given to Focus, and will continue to enjoy watching him on the BBC’s sport output as well as the wider BBC.”

Football Focus has been running since 1974, and Walker's stint has seen him involved in several compelling stunts, including taking the show to Afghanistan as well as being on the road with the FA Cup.

He also played a part in a classic interview between ex-Man City bad boy Mario Balotelli and Oasis star Noel Gallagher.

Walker is normally joined on the show by a range of pundits, including most frequently Mark Lawrenson and Jermaine Jenas.

Former Tottenham and England star Jenas could well be one of the names in the frame now to replace Walker in the role, after previously being touted as a potential successor to Gary Lineker as presenter on Match of the Day.

Hosting Football Focus would be the ideal stepping stone for Jenas' burgeoning broadcasting career, which has already seen him feature on MOTDx and Five Live's Friday Football Social.
