Manchester United have continued to be linked with Barcelona forward Ousmane Dembele, with the 23-year-old’s current contract due to expire next summer. Dembele has been on international duty with France this week and he scored the opener in his country’s 2-0 World Cup qualifying win over Kazakhstan on Sunday.

Dembele fired France ahead with a smart finish after some good build-up play from current United stars Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial.

Speaking after the game, France boss Didier Deschamps praised both Martial and Dembele, saying: “They did some interesting things.

“Ousmane has confirmed that he’s getting back on the right track.

“He’s capable of repeated sprints and making the difference. He was rewarded with his goal.

“Anthony was behind the opening goal. It’s good for them both.

“From the moment I selected them, they are in the squad to be used.

“I have other attackers in this squad. But for the profile of the opponent, it was important to commit opponents and to dribble. They both did it pretty well.”

The pair could end up as team-mates at club level as well as international level, with Spanish outlet claiming United will make a move for the winger this summer.

The report claims that United have already made contact with Dembele and informed him of their plan.

Should United’s advances be rebuffed this summer, they are willing to wait until Dembele’s contract expires and sign him on a free transfer.

Barcelona, however, are said to have made it a priority to begin talks with the player about extending his stay at the Nou Camp.

Reaching an agreement will not be straightforward though, with Dembele a high earner and Barcelona’s most recent financial report revealing that the club is over £1billion in debt.

As a result, Barcelona may be unable to match Dembele’s salary demands and they could be forced to sell him this summer in order to avoid losing him for free.

Speaking earlier this month, Dembele opened up about the injury problems which have marred his time at Barcelona so far, telling Telefoot: “I want to give a lot of thanks to my teammates, but honestly since 2017 I was very weak. Now I have physically changed and I feel better prepared for the games.

“This year is going better, I have improved a lot in Barcelona, with the physical trainers, the way of training, the way of preparing for the games, everything has changed.

“Now I feel good about myself, even though I have struggled with all these physical problems for 3 years. These are life experiences that must be taken with a smile.”
