Diogo Dalot has opened up on the text conversation that he had with Cristiano Ronaldo when the superstar returned to Manchester United. Ronaldo’s future had been in question for much of the summer, before he eventually left Juventus for the Red Devils on deadline day.

Dalot and Ronaldo also play together for the Portugal national team, with the duo appearing alongside each other at Euro 2020.

As well as being team-mates on the international stage, the pair were also opponents in Serie A last season.

Ronaldo was in his third year with Juventus, winning the Italian top-flight’s golden boot award, while Dalot was on loan at AC Milan.

They faced each other twice, with Dalot starting once and coming on as a substitute in the other, while Ronaldo started both clashes.

Dalot was Milan’s right-back for the first match, which ended in a 3-1 defeat for his side, before playing the final eight minutes of a 3-0 win at Juve.

The 22-year-old returned to United following that loan spell at the San Siro, impressing Solskjaer enough to convince United to not attempt a serious bid to buy Kieran Trippier.

Dalot has mainly been the back-up to Aaron Wan-Bissaka, only starting the defeat to West Ham in the Carabao Cup so far.

But he was delighted to see Ronaldo return to Old Trafford, and even texted his new team-mate when the move was confirmed.

“It’s fantastic not just for me to have Cristiano here, but for everyone. He gives so much energy to everyone and he’s been fantastic,” Dalot told United’s club website.

“I texted him and congratulated him about coming back as soon as it was confirmed. He said how happy he was to be part of this club again.

“He wants to help the team and that’s what we want, and he’s been doing that already. I think fans can expect the same Cristiano as always.

“To be here winning what he has won and playing like he is playing, you can expect the best.

“We are here to help him, and he is here to help us as well, and I think everything combined we can do great things.”

Dalot appeared alongside Ronaldo when he came on as a substitute in the defeat to Young Boys and hailed his team-mate’s impact on the United squad.

“I think it’s the way he conducts himself and prepares himself for the games,” Dalot added.

Obviously, now watching that closely, it’s another level and it’s special to combine the way you saw him before [he came back] and now you can see him behind the scenes as well and combine everything.

“It’s amazing to have that energy and that mentality also in the dressing room. I think he brings everybody up and I think that’s so positive for us.”
