Carlo Ancelotti's decision to jump ship at Everton caught Dominic Calvert-Lewin totally off guard.
The Italian called time on his 18-month reign at Goodison Park on Tuesday – in favour of a second stint as Real Madrid boss.
And like the rest of football, Calvert-Lewin admits he and his fellow Everton team-mates had no inkling of what was about to happen.
The Three Lions forward, who blossomed on Ancelotti’s watch and cracked 21 goals last season, said: “It's come as a shock. I don't think anybody expected it.
“I haven't spoken to anybody at the club apart from the Everton lads who are with England. We all felt the same. It's a big, big surprise.”
Should Dominic Calvert-Lewin start for England this summer? Let us know in the comments section below.
The lighting speed of Ancelotti’s exit for the Bernabeu was perhaps the most astonishing element of all.
Yet Calvert-Lewin, 24, also accepts that the managerial upheaval on Merseyside is just part and parcel of the elite game.
The Everton striker added : “I first saw the speculation on the day that he left. By the evening, he was gone – so it was a shock.
“You just have to roll with these things. It’s how football works and you have to move forward."
