Manchester United new boy Donny van de Beek insists Dutch stars Robin van Persie, Edwin van der Sar and Daley Blind helped him fall in love with the club.
Van de Beek joined United in a £35million switch from Ajax earlier this month, snubbing the likes of Tottenham and Real Madrid to sign for the club.
The Netherlands midfielder impressed in his first outing last weekend, displaying some skilful footwork as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side slumped to a 1-0 friendly defeat against Aston Villa.
And he is expected to make his competitive debut in this Saturday’s Premier League opener against Crystal Palace.
Ahead of his potential bow, Van de Beek has admitted he used to watch United a lot as a youngster due to fellow Dutchmen Van Persie, Van der Sar and Blind playing for the club.
“I watched United a lot [when I was younger]. Because a lot of Dutch players have played here and this was nice to watch if you're a young kid and you see Dutch players there,” he told Inside United magazine.
“Daley, Edwin, Robin van Persie… you see them. They won a lot of titles and United always played nice football, which was always good to see.”
Ajax CEO Van der Sar – who helped the Red Devils claim four Premier League titles and the Champions League in six years at Old Trafford – negotiated Van de Beek’s move to his former side.
After finalising the transfer, the ex-United goalkeeper wrote an open letter to the club’s fans.
“Dear Manchester United fans, I hope you're doing well,” he said.
“It seems our paths have crossed again. One of ours is joining you this season. And like so many players before him, he's been with us since he was just a little boy.
