Donny van de Beek has revealed how Liverpool stars Virgil van Dijk and Georginio Wijnaldum advised him on his move to Manchester United.

The Netherlands international is Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's first signing of the summer as he looks to bolster his squad and mount a Premier League title challenge.

The 23-year-old joins after a £36.5m bid plus £4m in add-ons was accepted by Ajax.

United beat the likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona and Tottenham to his signature while the move also signifies an end to the pursuit of Jack Grealish.

Van de Beek forced a move through after personal talks with Solskjaer.

And he has gone on to state that Holland team-mates Van Dijk and Wijnaldum helped him make up his mind.

He said: “Both Gini and Virgil made it clear to me that I am facing something far more physical than I am used to in the Eredivisie.

“And they told me that I won't be able to handle it just by going into the gym more.

“I know that it is going to be a big challenge for me on the pitch.”

Van de Beek has agreed a five-year contract at Old Trafford, which also has an option to extend it by another season.

And the midfielder is over the moon to complete a move to Old Trafford and cannot wait to get started.

Van de Beek said: “I cannot begin to explain how incredible an opportunity it is to join a club with such an amazing history.

“I would like to thank everyone at Ajax.

"I grew up there and I will always have a special bond with the club.

“I am now ready to take the next step in my career and perform at the highest level and there is no higher standard than Manchester United.
