Erik ten Hag has stated that his Manchester United team is more important than any individual ahead of today’s clash against Southampton.

The Dutchman has resisted the urge to start new £70million signing Casemiro and also left Cristiano Ronaldo on the bench once again, as he sticks to the same team that beat Liverpool on Monday night.

Speaking before the game to BT Sport pundits Rio Ferdinand, Paul Scholes and Peter Crouch, Ten Haag commented on how he puts the team first ahead of the individual stars at Old Trafford.

The Dutchman says the team will always come before any individual players at the club

‘As a manager, you have to make the clear decisions.’ He told the trio before the game at St Mary’s.

‘The team is always the most important and you make the decisions for the advantage of the team. But in your communications, you have to be clear and honest.’

One of those decisions has been with new signing Casemiro, who Ten Hag has resisted giving a debut from the start. Stating that it was a difficult call, but he’ll need time to get up to speed with the Premier League.

Casemiro has been left on the bench for Manchester United’s clash with Southampton today

‘I think we have a squad that is quite competitive, so it’s always a difficult decision but as you say we had a really good result on Monday and we will stick with it but it is also to give Casemiro the time.

He has not played one game for 90 mins and he has to adapt to England and adapt to Man United and we have to give him the time to integrate in the team.’

United will be hoping to build on Monday night’s morale boosting win over Liverpool following the Red Devils last away day disaster against Brentford. Ten Hag believes his side need to learn from the defeat to the Bees and be more direct against Southampton.

United will be hoping for a better result than their last away trip against Brentford

‘We have to learn from the Brentford game. we have to use our targets, we have speed in front and we have to use it. We can also play the second ball, we have the midfield to win second balls. With Rashford, Elanga etc we have fast players up front.

‘The first thing was the mentality, we had to work on that. We had to deal better with long balls, be more compact, we had to deal with the issue when the opponents puts under a high press and to come out.

To try and play short balls out and we get killed. We have intelligent players and so they need to manage to game.’
