Europa League supercomputer tips Premier League winner ahead of knockout stage

Manchester United are favourites to win the Europa League but Arsenal are hot on their heels, a supercomputer has predicted.

The Red Devils dropped down to the Europa League after failing to progress from the Champions League group stage and face Real Sociedad this Thursday.

Meanwhile, Arsenal are looking to maintain their 100 per cent record in the competition this season as they face Benfica.

Fellow Premier League clubs Tottenham and Leicester are also in the mix and face Wolfsberg and Slavia Prague respectively.

A host of giant clubs on the continent are also vying for Europa League glory, including AC Milan and Ajax.

It has proved a tricky competition to navigate in the past, but FiveThirtyEight predicts Manchester United have the best chance of clinching the Europa League trophy in May.

The supercomputer gives Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side an 11 per cent chance of winning the competition – a whole three per cent more than any of the 31 other teams in contention.

La Liga side Sociedad are second-favourites with eight per cent, while Arsenal, Leicester and Napoli have been given a seven per cent chance of victory in the final.

Jose Mourinho has won the trophy twice in his managerial career, but Tottenham have only been given a six per cent chance of going all the way this season – as have Roma, Bayer Leverkusen and RB Salzburg.

But the supercomputer predicts Spurs have the highest chance of progressing to the last 16 of any team, giving the north London club an 89 per cent chance of beating Austrian minnows Wolfsberg.
