Everton star Jordan Pickford hires bodyguards after death threats for Van Dijk tackle

Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford has been forced to hire protection for his family after receiving death threats following his tackle on Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk.

In the recent Merseyside derby, Pickford caught Van Dijk with a reckless challenge which saw the Dutchman leave the pitch.

Within 24 hours it was confirmed Van Dijk had suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury and would be out of action for several months.

Liverpool were angered by the tackle by Pickford and he was heavily criticised by Jurgen Klopp and Georginio Wijnaldum.

Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti jumped to the defence of his No 1 goalkeeper.

But that has not prevented Pickford and his wife from receiving death threats made against them.

And according to the Daily Mail, the England No 1 has hired a security company to watch over his home.

The report says Pickford has created a ‘ring of steel’ with bodyguards keeping a close eye on him, his wife Megan and one-year-old son.

Meanwhile, Abdoulaye Doucoure has opened up about his summer move from Watford and says the Toffees have a squad capable of competing against the Premier League’s best.

He told Evertonfc.com: “Previously, maybe people thought, ‘There is a top six, with Everton just behind’.
