Champions League fans were left baffled after thinking they had spotted Leandro Trossard referring Bayern Munich vs Manchester City.

Although it was in fact Frenchman Clement Turpin officiating the contest, social media users chuckled at their likeness with others insisting that there must be a relation.

Fans even posted picture comparisons to show just how similar the pair look, with only 12 years between the former Brighton star and Ligue 1 official.

One viewer said on Twitter: "Why is Leandro Trossard refereeing this game?" A second added: "Didn't expect to see Leandro Trossard reffing the game tbh."

A third continued: "Surprising call from UEFA to have Leandro Trossard refereeing this game between Bayern Munich and Man City…" A fourth agreed: "Didn’t realise that Leandro Trossard got a refereeing license."

A fifth said: "This referee is a spit for Leandro Trossard." An Arsenal fan said when asked about the referee: "Plot twist, it’s actually Leandro Trossard and he’s doing everything he can to ensure City get torn apart by Real Madrid in the semi-finals."

Turpin awarded a first-half penalty to City which was missed by Erling Haaland – and was also forced to use his body to stop a fuming Ilkay Gundogan.

One man who wasn't a fan of the refereeing performance was Rio Ferdinand, saying that he: "Tried to make it about himself."

City will soon see the real Trossard when Arsenal head to the Etihad next Wednesday for their crunch Premier League clash.
