Fans left in disbelief at where Southgate ranks Maguire among Man Utd’s players

Football fans are in disbelief that Gareth Southgate ranks Harry Maguire as Manchester United's "best centre-back" after jumping to the defence of the England star.

Maguire, 29, has received heavy backlash from supporters in recent weeks with the Red Devils playing catch-up in the race for the Champions League. And the Sheffield-born defender was subject to mass boos at Wembley on Tuesday evening as England played Ivory Coast in an international friendly.

Following the match, Three Lions boss Southgate slammed the jeering as an "absolute joke" and vehemently hit back at fans who had chosen to boo Maguire. Southgate called on England supporters to get behind the team, otherwise, the result could be of detriment to their World Cup chances.

He said: "We need Harry Maguire playing well if we're going to have a chance this summer because we're not going to win a World Cup with players who have got three or four caps. That's not happened in the history of the game. So, we need our experienced players playing well.

"Particularly in those positions on the field he's top quality. In my opinion, he's the best centre-back at his club as well. And where this has all started and being fed, I'm not sure.

"But it's ludicrous. It's almost like every time he steps on a football pitch every action is analysed to death. I can't remember a player having that sort of spotlight on them at any point."

But Man Utd fans have taken issue with Southgate's post-match remarks as they feel Maguire is far from the best defender at the club. The comments from the England boss have stirred a social meltdown with several supporters taking to Twitter to gripe at his "best centre-back" analysis.

"Best centre-back at his club? Phil Jones’ performance against Wolves was better than anything I’ve seen from Maguire this season," jibed one fan.

"Varane > Lindelof > Bailly > Jones > Maguire in this order," commented another.

"Damn.. I don't know how this guy is the England manager. The best centre-back at his club? Does he even watch football?" quipped a third.

"He’s defo not the best CB at United. His actions on the pitch are analysed to death because most of them lead to us conceding a goal," lambasted a fourth.
