Have you ever been left feeling disappointed with the beer you've been served at a football stadium? If the answer is yes, then you're not alone in feeling that way.
There's nothing better than that matchday feeling after a long week, and better still, that first beer when you enter the stadium. But according to a recent survey conducted by FootyBevs, over 86 percent of football fans are unhappy with the beer served at stadiums despite continuing to pay through the nose for it.
The FootyBevs Twitter account has given fans a platform to share their awful experiences with some questionable beverage options, although there are some exceptions. And Daily Star Sport have teamed up with both Heineken UK and FootyBevs to see exactly what you should be expecting when being served that matchday pint.
Following the success of the Twitter profile FootyScran, which highlights the best and worst food served at football grounds, FootyBevs was founded last November. It has since amassed over 65,000 followers as fans share snaps of the best (and worst) pints they’ve been served at stadiums around the country.
And upon discovery that lots of fans were suffering from poor experiences, a poll was put out on the profile, with 86 per-cent of participants claiming that they are left disappointed with beer at football grounds. And due to the shocking figures, Heineken UK invited Daily Star Sport down to the London Stadium to show fans exactly what they should be expecting.
The London Stadium is home to West Ham United, and on a typical matchday they serve 45,000 pints, with 360 bar staff in attendance to cover the 65,000 fans that roll in on a weekly basis. Heineken have ensured that the quality of beer at the London Stadium is excellent, but that doesn't mean that other stadiums are meeting the same expectations.
Tom Sibley, owner of FootyBevs, told Daily Star Sport: "Since we launched FootyBevs around 6 months ago, we’ve been overwhelmed with the response from football supporters, who have been sharing pictures of their good and not-so-good pints in droves. The majority of drinks shared normally look pretty good, but there have definitely been a few shockers!"
But if there's one man who knows how to serve a pint, it's Gary Smith, who is a Draught Master at Heineken UK. Smith's job is to go up and down the country ensuring that Heineken is being served correctly, with football stadiums a priority. And as an avid football fan himself, Smith knows how important a good pint can be to add to the matchday experience.
"As a huge football fan and beer drinker, I know first-hand how important it is to be served a top-quality pint as part of the overall matchday experience," Smith said. "It’s easy to empathise when fans get frustrated after queuing at the bar to then get served a badly poured drink."
And with the help of Heineken and Smith, Graham Gilmore, CEO of London Stadium, is satisfied that everyone is served the perfect pint when watching West Ham. Gilmore said: "On a typical matchday, London Stadium holds up to 60,000 supporters. It takes an enormous amount of forward planning, logistics and team effort to ensure that every visitor gets the very best experience.
"Delaware North, the food and beverage services operator at London Stadium, employ around 360 specially trained kiosk staff on any given match day, serving over 45,000 pints from 174 draught taps around the venue, pumped through 830 metres of draught beer and cider pipes – which equates to over 8 times the length of the pitch."
There is a lot that goes on behind the scenes to ensure that pints can flow freely and quickly, but all football fans care about is that their beer is up to scratch. And judging by some of the experiences shared on FootyBevs, that's unfortunately not always the case!
