Frank Lampard was full of praise for Kai Havertz and Timo Werner after the German duo made their Chelsea debuts away at Brighton on Monday night.
The Blues ran out 3-1 winners in their opening Premier League fixture, with goals from Jorginho, Reece James and Kurt Zouma enough to seal three points despite Leandro Trossard netting an equaliser for the hosts.
Having spent over £200million this summer, there were plenty of eyes on Lampard’s team selection at the Amex and he handed full debuts to both Havertz and Werner.
Neither played managed to get on the scoresheet, although Werner won the penalty which allowed Jorginho to open the scoring while also looking bright at times.
Havertz endured a slightly more frustrating evening, but Lampard was impressed regardless.
“It’s not a game that you’d come away and say [Havertz] had 10 vintage moments, but I thought there were moments of real quality and calmness,” he told Sky Sports.
“It’s a big ask, there’s a lot on his shoulders for the signing that he was, the fact that he’s young coming to a different league.
“He plays the game at such a pace in terms of his quality and how he receives the ball, I thought we saw a few glimpses of that.
“We also saw him sprint back 80 yards to make a defensive tackle or interception having giving the ball away.
“So everything that I’ve seen about him in terms of his character is spot on and his quality’s going to come through.
“It’s asking a lot of him tonight, but I think we saw glimpses and we’re going to see a lot more of him. I think he’s a hugely talented young player.
When asked if Werner showed exactly how threatening he can be, Lampard said: “Yeah we did, we did. And we know that. I love the way that Timo pops up in different areas. He’s not a frontman that attaches to centre-backs so much.

“Sometimes he can start from a little bit deeper, but when he goes he goes. We saw that with the burst of pace, because I think for the penalty the ball was slightly overplayed and he still gets there – and he has that about him.
“He has a real hunger to score goals and be ruthless in those areas. So I think we saw a lot of signs from Timo tonight of what he’s gonna bring.”
