Gary Neville has complimented Erik ten Hag on coming through his debut season in charge of Manchester United by showing he has got the ‘capability’ to deal with the magnitude of the job.

The former United full-back highlighted the Dutchman’s ability to overcome issues both on and off the pitch as he attempted to guide the club back to the Champions League.

Neville admitted he has been impressed with the way Ten Hag dealt with Cristiano Ronaldo’s controversial departure, Harry Maguire’s place in the squad, and the ongoing ownership takeover at United.

‘I think he has proved he has the confidence and authority to be able to make big decisions,’ Neville told Sky Sports.

‘That is one thing he has hammered home to everybody, to deal with [Cristiano] Ronaldo the way he did, Harry Maguire has not been an easy situation, Mason Greenwood, the takeover constantly going on with Glazer family dragging it out right to the very end, big defeats Liverpool 7-0, Brentford 4-0, massive question marks, recruitment, massive question marks.

‘He has a had a five, 10-year Man United managerial career in one season and dealt with it really well, he has proven he has got the capability to deal with it.

‘What he has to do now is jump forward next season with new owners, hopefully progress like Jurgen Klopp did with Liverpool to hopefully one day a title,’ he added.

United have bounced back from their worst-ever Premier League season by winning the Carabao Cup, qualifying for the FA Cup final and taking them to the brink of Champions League qualification.

Neville further explained that his former side have improved under Ten Hag’s tenure, but need new owners to help close the gap to recently-crowned Premier League champions Manchester City.

‘I think the manager done a very good job when you think of problems at start of season, issues he has to deal with have been substantial, big losses to recover from, mountain of games, he has done very well and proven he can handle magnitude of united.

‘Now it’s about getting new owners in and showing they can progress on and off pitch in next few years.

‘They have been way off for 10 years from Man City, they have been nowhere near them,’ he added.
