AC Milan forward Olivier Giroud had urged former boss Frank Lampard to take the reins at Newcastle describing it as a "good challenge".
Having been taken over by the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund on Thursday, the new owners are keen to challenge at the top end of the table.
The consortium, fronted by Amanda Staveley, have a wealth 10 times greater than Premier League champions Manchester City and are ready to pump money into the club.
Current Magpies boss Steve Bruce is not expected to take charge of the team on Sunday and is reportedly finalising his pay-off package to end his two-year stay on Tyneside.
Lampard is one of the favourites to replace Bruce in the dugout. The former Chelsea captain has been out of work since being axed as Blues boss in January of last year.
Thomas Tuchel was brought in to replace Lampard after a dip in form, with the German gaffer going on to claim the club's second Champions League trophy.

"I talked to him maybe last year," said the AC Milan forward when speaking to talkSPORT.
I think he's looking for a good challenge to come back as a manager and I think it's a good option, yeah definitely, for him.
"I believe Newcastle is a big team in the Prem [Premier League] and it's a good challenge for him to bounce back and to show his quality."
